This is a rather personal item because I often suffer from migraines--a debilitating experience that runs in my family and for which there is no known cause, much less cure. I use this oil to provide a little extra calm and soothing to my system when I am experiencing one. In particular, this oil is targeted for use on the back of the neck and on the abdomen. Ginger and peppermint oils help calm digestion as well as aid in direct pain relief. Clary sage, lavender, and chamomile help to calm the nervous system.

How does aromatherapy work?

When essential oils are used for aromatherapy in migraines and headaches they serve a dual purpose; firstly, the stimulate our olfactory (scent) receptors, which initiates a response in our limbic system. The limbic system is a part of the brain that is responsible for emotional responses. Therefore, in this way essential oils can change our moods simply through our exposure to their scent! Lavender, chamomile and sage provide a calming effect.

The second beneficial property of the direct application of essential oils to the skin has to do with their interaction with the muscle tissue to provide pain relief in the case of a migraine. For example, peppermint oil contains menthol, which has a cooling effect. Menthol can also penetrate the muscle tissue and allow for muscular relaxation. Similarly, ginger oil contains gingerols and shogaols, which provide a pain-relieving effect as well.

USES: Roll oil on temple, back of the neck, wrists, or abdomen at onset of a migraine.
